Drawing inspiration from Walt Disney’s approach to innovation, Cooper emphasized the need to address core questions about driving innovation and overcoming the blockers.

The presentation introduced eight key practices that drive nonprofit innovation:

  1. Dismantle team silos to foster collaboration.
  2. Establish clear metrics and goals.
  3. Adopt agile methodologies for iterative improvement.
  4. Implement human-centered design to build empathy.
  5. Manage change effectively.
  6. Cultivate a culture of innovation.
  7. Leverage community and storytelling.
  8. Develop generosity operations to align and drive fundraising efforts.

Practical tips included creating Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), iterating with users in two-week sprints, and embracing the concept of failing fast.

Embrace Innovation and Change

Innovation is essential for nonprofits to stay relevant and continue making an impact. Organizations must occasionally reset and find small pockets of innovation to keep pace with the rapidly changing world. Nonprofits should aspire to be curious and constantly seek new paths.

Asking the Core Questions to Drive Nonprofit Innovation

Nonprofits should examine their peer groups to identify how the top nonprofits drive innovation to tackle challenges. Just as important is understanding the inhibitors of innovation and how to overcome them.

Martec’s Law and Organizational Change

Technology changes exponentially, while organizations change more slowly, creating a gap, according to Martec’s Law. Organizations must occasionally reset to keep up with technological advancements.

Taking a Broader View of Innovation

Innovation is not limited to technology; it includes processes, tactics, team dynamics, and organizational culture. You have to consider all of these elements as you map out the approach to innovation in your organization.

Human-Centered Design (HCD)

Nonprofits must show empathy by understanding the needs and experiences of those served, including donors. HCD is a process of empathizing, defining problems, ideating solutions, prototyping, and testing.

Practical Tips for HCD

Ask “why” five times to understand the root cause of problems. Create Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) to test hypotheses quickly and efficiently. Iterate with users in two-week sprints for continuous improvement. Embrace failing fast and learning from failures to drive nonprofit innovation.

Generosity Operations

Establish a generosity operations team that works across departments to drive a coherent strategy, share insights, and align the organization on KPIs. Focus on metrics, data visibility, dismantling silos, and automating menial tasks to focus on meaningful work.

Tools and Techniques to Drive Nonprofit Innovation

Use business intelligence and visualization tools to gain better data insights. Employ marketing and process automation software to streamline tasks. Implement collaboration tools like Trello, Slack, and Notion to facilitate communication and knowledge sharing.
