{"id":21928,"date":"2020-12-08T16:40:03","date_gmt":"2020-12-08T16:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/virtuous.org\/raise\/2020\/12\/08\/avoid-this-end-of-year-giving-disaster\/"},"modified":"2020-12-08T16:40:03","modified_gmt":"2020-12-08T16:40:03","slug":"avoid-this-end-of-year-giving-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/virtuous.org\/raise\/avoid-this-end-of-year-giving-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"Avoid this End of Year Giving Disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><h3>For most nonprofits, the end of year giving season is in full swing.<\/h3>\n<p>Even if donors haven\u2019t received your end of year fundraising messaging yet, chances are, you\u2019ve been working on it for quite some time already to prepare for this all-important fundraising season.<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptechforgood.com\/2015\/09\/16\/20-must-know-fundraising-and-social-media-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">good reason for that<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>30% of all giving occurs in the last month of the year,<\/li>\n<li>12% of all giving happens in the last three days of the year, and<\/li>\n<li>Most of that 12% is given on the last day of the year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s not unheard of for some nonprofits to cover up to half of their entire annual operating budget in the month of December alone.<\/p>\n<p>There are several reasons for why donors are highly motivated to give at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>For most donors, December contains holidays dedicated to giving, unselfishness, and good cheer. This means they\u2019re already in a giving mood and want to do something good in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Yet by far the biggest reason to give in December is to get a break on their taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, the tax break incentive emphasizes the December 31 midnight deadline, making this the most productive fundraising season for nonprofits of every stripe.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this is a great scenario for charitable giving, and ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/virtuous.org\/raise\/what-do-nonprofits-really-have-to-offer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, each year, there are a number of organizations who run into major problems with their online giving setup during the month of December.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest disaster can strike when you\u2019re least able to correct course \u2013 payment gateway rejections.<\/p>\n<h2>Payment Gateway Gift Rejections<\/h2>\n<p>In 2017, people gave $31 billion <a href=\"https:\/\/nonprofitssource.com\/online-giving-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">through online gifts<\/a> with 54% of global donors preferring \u201cto give online with a credit or debit card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, all of these transactions go through without a hitch.<\/p>\n<p>The transaction is facilitated by a complex, secure, and almost instantaneous technical process the donor isn\u2019t even aware is happening.<\/p>\n<p>But each year, there are a significant percentage of these transactions that are rejected by payment gateways for a variety of reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Payments can be rejected because the payment gateway suspects a duplicate transaction is being made, certain rules (technical or legal) are being violated, or the gift is over the risk threshold.<\/p>\n<h3>The risk threshold is a predetermined limit on the transaction amount a payment gateway will allow to be processed.<\/h3>\n<p>This risk threshold is meant to protect you from the liability of paying for fraudulent transactions or some other kind of scam.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if your average gift is $300, and all of a sudden, a $20,000 transaction hits your payment gateway, the system automatically assumes it\u2019s fraudulent.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, this is a good safety protocol.<\/p>\n<h3>But when this safety protocol is not adjusted for the year end giving season, problems can arise.<\/h3>\n<p>During the end of year giving season, gift amounts tend to increase, and this is where the end of year giving disaster can hit you.<\/p>\n<p>Large, unforeseen online gifts can set off payment gateway security protocols thus canceling the online gift transaction.<\/p>\n<p><i>What a disaster!<\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%;height: 0;padding-bottom: 83%;position: relative\"><\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>This is extremely frustrating for the donor.
