Here\u2019s another kind of friction that you should be on the lookout for as you optimize your pages.<\/h3>\n<p>As donors work their way through your content, there\u2019s a moment when they know they want to give.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re experiencing an emotional climax.<\/p>\n<p>They feel connected on many levels to your cause by now, and they trust in your value proposition.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, even at this powerful moment, the least amount of friction can convince a potential donor to walk away.<\/p>\n<p>Friction is any kind of discomfort, doubt, or inconvenience that causes a donor to give up on giving a gift.<\/p>\n<p>In this series on removing friction from nonprofit donation pages, we\u2019re covering the seven types of friction we saw in our research for the <a href=\"https:\/\/virtuous.org\/raise\/online-fundraising-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State of Nonprofit Donation Pages Benchmark Study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we\u2019re going to consider field layout friction and how optimizing the field layout on two different cases improved the conversion rates on these nonprofit donation pages.<\/p>\n<h2>Field Layout Friction<\/h2>\n<p>The layout of the fields on your giving page is more important than you\u2019d think.<\/p>\n<p>But we found that when the fields of a giving form were arranged in a dense or confusing manner, there was a negative impact on giving.<\/p>\n<h2>Case No. 1<\/h2>\n<p>For example, in this experiment, the form fields are the same but are laid out differently.<\/p>\n<p>On the left side, you can see that we stacked the form fields vertically.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a simple layout, right?<\/p>\n<p>The only thing the donor has to do is keep going down filling out each field one by one.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5955\" src=\"https:\/\/virtuous.org\/raise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/fromthis-1024x862.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"862\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the right, we changed the layout.<\/p>\n<p>We took advantage of the horizontal space on the sides of the landing page to place an extra field or two on the side.<\/p>\n<p>This makes the form look shorter, and you complete the information in groups.<\/p>\n<h3><b>What did this layout change do?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The change caused a 39% increase in donations!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5956\" src=\"https:\/\/virtuous.org\/raise\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2024\/03\/tumblr_ppolcwEpZF1qivpevo1_500.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right. Simply changing the layout removed friction from the donation page that holding the nonprofit back from 39% more giving revenue.<\/p>\n<p>But why?<\/p>\n<p>First of all, the layout on the right makes the form feel shorter.<\/p>\n<p>This makes you feel like it won\u2019t take very long.<\/p>\n<p>Visually long giving forms, even if they have the same number of fields, cause friction because you just feel like it\u2019s going to take a while to get through.<\/p>\n<p>Also, when you\u2019re going down through the form fields, you can\u2019t help but feel like there\u2019s no end to them. It\u2019s just one after another.<\/p>\n<p>But when form fields lay next to each other, you can see the end of the giving form easily.<\/p>\n<p>And when you see the light at the end of the tunnel, you feel better about getting there.<\/p>\n<h2>Case No. 2<\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example from the <a href=\"https:\/\/virtuous.org\/raise\/online-fundraising-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research study<\/a> where every form field is on a separate line, and they\u2019re not taking advantage of any horizontal space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5957\" src=\"https:\/\/virtuous.org\/raise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-29-at-10.07.10-PM-1024x934.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"934\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now compare the left one to the example on the right.<\/p>\n<p>Can you feel the difference?<\/p>\n<p>The first page wastes a lot of space on the sides. It\u2019s narrow and cramped.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, it looks much longer. Visually, it <i>looks like a challenge<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Like climbing a mountain, the field layout on the left just doesn\u2019t look like something the donor wants to do.<\/p>\n<p>This is friction, and it will cause many potential donors to just walk away from the giving process.<\/p>\n<p>Now consider the example on the right. The more horizontal form has a leaner flow and feels easier to complete.<\/p>\n<p>It welcomes you to complete the form as it feels like it will be easier and faster to complete.<\/p>\n<p>Donors can feel the difference.<\/p>\n<h2>But what about mobile layouts?<\/h2>\n<p>Good question.<\/p>\n<p>Mobile layouts automatically restrict the amount of horizontal space available.
