Started in 2012, the GivingTuesday movement hasn\u2019t slowed down at all. In fact, the total amount of money raised in 2018 was $400 million!<\/span><\/h3>\n

If you aren\u2019t completely aware of what GivingTuesday\u2019s all about, it\u2019s an internationally organized giving event set on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday each year.<\/span><\/p>\n

GivingTuesday was started by <\/span>New York\u2019s 92<\/span>nd<\/span> Street Y<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>United Nations Foundation<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Heavy hitters like <\/span>Microsoft<\/span><\/a>, Skype, <\/span>Cisco<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>Sony<\/span><\/a> soon partnered in the endeavor. Once other popular media outlets like <\/span>Huffington Post<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>CNet<\/span><\/a> covered the story, GivingTuesday was set to become an international phenomenon.<\/span><\/p>\n

So what is it all about?<\/span><\/h3>\n

According to <\/span>GivingTuesday\u2019s<\/span><\/a> website:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Celebrated on the Tuesday following U.S. Thanksgiving,\u00a0and fueled by the power of social media and collaboration, GivingTuesday inspires millions of people across the globe to show up and give back to causes and issues that matter to them.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Through massive social media campaigns and the combined marketing force of the #GivingTuesday brand, GivingTuesday motivates millions of people around the world to make a donation to some cause they care about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nonprofit organizations who register at GivingTuesday.com<\/a> use the media kits and marketing strategies provided to run GivingTuesday campaigns, driving donors to make a gift on that specific day.<\/span><\/p>\n

The GivingTuesday platform also works like a menu system for individuals visiting the site by making suggestions on nonprofits that serve in the areas of interest of the donor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes the participant already knows which nonprofit to give to, but many find new organizations doing the work they care about through the GivingTuesday platform.<\/span><\/p>\n

This has the combined effect of kicking off the end of the year charitable season while bringing potential new donors into the philanthropic \u201cmarket.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And this year, GivingTuesday is set for Tuesday, December 3.<\/span><\/p>\n

Should your organization register for GivingTuesday?<\/h3>\n

This is the big question, right?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While it\u2019s all well and good that $400 million was raised collectively last year, how much did the individual nonprofits participating in GivingTuesday raise?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Was it worth the extra effort to implement GivingTuesday campaigns in addition to their normal campaigns?<\/span><\/p>\n

To be honest, I don\u2019t know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some organizations rave about their experience with GivingTuesday. Others say it\u2019s not worth the effort.<\/span><\/p>\n

It all seems to depend on the kind of nonprofit you have and if GivingTuesday fits within your fundraising strategy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Personally, I see it as a viable options nonprofits should at least consider.<\/span><\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re convinced that you want to give GivingTuesday a shot this year, here are some things to keep in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tips for #GivingTuesday Success<\/span><\/h3>\n

1. Do your research.<\/b><\/h4>\n

Think through why you want to participate. Read through the <\/span>positive feedback<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>negative feedback<\/span><\/a> about the event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, make your choice and know why you\u2019re doing it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if you\u2019re completely onboard with the idea, reading through the negative comments will show you what to avoid or how to better prepare for your GivingTuesday campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Craft your GivingTuesday messaging strategy.<\/b><\/h4>\n

#GivingTuesday is its own brand. You\u2019ll need to think through your messaging so that you can link your nonprofit brand with GivingTuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Donors can become confused with the whole idea of donating at a third party website, so you\u2019ll need to think through how to connect the dots for them.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Write down your goals.<\/b><\/h4>\n

Goal-setting is always a good practice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Consider the possible reasonable outcomes to participating in GivingTuesday for a nonprofit like yours and set a goal for your organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This exercise will come in especially handy when you\u2019re at the end of the campaign and need to decide if you\u2019ll do it again the next time.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Follow the right advice.<\/b><\/h4>\n

GivingTuesday.com has great resources and advice for participating nonprofits. Be sure to read through and implement everything that makes sense to you.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are other places to get good advice on implementing a successful GivingTuesday campaign strategy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I recommend you check out The Knight Foundation\u2019s site at <\/span>givingdayplaybook.org.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s some good stuff there for every kind of nonprofit.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Clarify your <\/b>value proposition<\/b><\/a>.<\/b><\/h4>\n

For me, this is the most crucial piece of advice anyone can give you about GivingTuesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The more successful GivingTuesday becomes, the more nonprofits will be jumping on the bandwagon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That means more brands in all the nonprofit verticals will be clamoring for the attention of GivingTuesday participants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More competition for you means your <\/span>value proposition<\/span><\/a> has to be crystal clear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure GivingTuesday visitors know exactly who you are and what you have to offer when they come to your nonprofit\u2019s description.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember, your value proposition is your answer to the following question:<\/span><\/p>\n

Why should I give to your organization rather than someone else or not at all?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The more compelling and succinct an answer you can make for that question, the more powerful your GivingTuesday campaign copy will be.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which means more fundraising success for your organization!<\/span><\/p>\n
